You know the feeling. A soft, round-headed little guy waves at you from panel one. Bright colors, chunky outlines, a face that belongs on a plush toy. You relax. Then panel four arrives and quietly takes your soul.
That is the whole trick of Light Roast Comics, the webcomic drawn by an artist named Michael and posted on Instagram as @lightroastcomics. The art promises a bedtime story. The punchline delivers grief, physics, capitalism, mortality and the occasional heroin joke.
We picked 20 strips that show exactly why the series spreads so fast across feeds. Some are pitch-black. Some are surprisingly sweet. A few manage both at once. Here is what makes each one land.
